Q&A With Artist, Elke Steen

Tell us a little bit about yourself

I am an illustrator and painter working mainly with gouache and watercolour. I have always loved going for walks collecting sticks, pods, seeds, flowers, shells and anything weird and wonderful I can find, and about 10 years ago I started painting them. I love finding beauty in little things everyday and celebrating them in my art by painting them in vivid colour. I also work full time in visual merchandising bringing to life product launches and campaigns in retail.

How did you get into painting?

I grew up in a creative family who encouraged me to draw and experiment. My grandmothers on both sides were wonderful painters and originally i loved to draw with oil pastels. I went to art school to study graphic design and got into painting there, where i liked to mock up ideas in watercolour.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by the beauty that is right under our noses, hiding in plain sight. I love painting things that remind me of the place I found them. My house is full of shells, dried flowers and coral I have found over the years!

How do you get into the right headspace to paint?

Because i work full time, the main thing i need is time – in the evenings and weekend mornings i like to put my phone away and set an alarm for when i need to finish up, also comfortable clothes, and some background music, podcast or even TV help me concentrate

What are some of your daily wellness rituals?

I have always been extremely active so for me exercise is my stress relief. I exercise pretty much every day at the least to walk my puppy Truman. I also love pilates and about a year ago I started Pole Dancing which I would recommend anyone to try to build confidence and strength. My best friend is opening a new studio in Sydney called Duality. I think also treating myself to a healthy, yummy dinner is a wellness ritual for me, does that count haha?
